Did you know bees pollinate 70 out of the 100 crop species that feed 90% of the population?
Without the teeny-tiny bees, we will not just lose the 70 odd crop species that feed us, but also lose all the animals that eat those crops. Bees are an integral part of the food chain- without them, there’s no us. And we need to talk about their reducing numbers.
Beekeepers are seeing an all time high decline in their honey bee colonies. The unusual disappearance of worker bees is hampering the colony’s survival and causing the colonies to become dysfunctional. Some reasons behind this:
Bees often get exposed to harmful pesticides when they suck nectar from various flowers.
Global warming has had an adverse impact on the bees.
Wildflower meadows are on a decline resulting in declining numbers of fauna that depends on flowers such as bees
Now is the time to open our eyes, and act. If nothing is done soon, we’ll lose our essentials such as apples, lemons, carrots and of course Honey!
The first step towards this is to spread awareness around the reducing bee numbers. Do share with you friends and family to tell them about the crisis we are facing and join the conversation using #SaveTheBees!
